Do I need to do my exercises every day?

I had an interesting chat with a member the other week about doing exercises at home.

Their question was “do I need to be doing these every day?”

It’s a great question.

And the answer will be different for everyone.

But let me paint a picture for you….

This person was training a combination of body weight and resistance training 3 to 4 times a week, walking most days of the week, and hiking on the weekends (the thing they LOVE to do).

They were moving their body every day of the week, AND doing meaningful activities with people they love.

So it was interesting to me that they felt they also needed to be doing additional exercises at home.

Now there are definitely circumstances where we might recommend doing something every day…

  • If you have avoided certain movements for a long time we might try to get some regular exposure to these

  • If you had an injury and we needed to build capacity back in specific tissues

  • Post-surgery or neurological event to regain your range of motion, strength, coordination and function

  • It feels good and you enjoy it!

But for most of us we don’t NEED to be doing specific exercises every day.

General movement has a huge amount of benefits for all of us and can meet a lot of our needs.

Spending time outdoors, doing things we enjoy or connecting with others has a huge positive impact on our health and pain.

If you have some moves that you love to do - go for it!

But don’t feel bad if you didn’t do your exercises while you were too busy out living your life!!
