Teachers - How do you answer “Am I doing this right?”
It's the question we get all the time.....
"What's the RIGHT way to do this exercise?"
How do you answer this for your clients?
Do you....
Give them a specific muscle group target to "switch on"?
Show them a "right" way and a "wrong" way?
These are both examples of communication I am consciously trying to move away from in the studio.
When answering this for my clients I want to always be....
- Expanding their understanding of the vast amount of normal human variation between bodies...
"your exercise is going to look different to mine - and that's ok"
- Encouraging them to question the focus of the exercise....
"what are we trying to achieve here?"
- Acknowledging that their own bodies needs can change from day to day...
" Can you think of any reason why this might feel different today than last time?"
- Understand the biomechanics at play in the different shapes they are making....
"what happens if you reach you legs higher or lower? can you feel any changes in the work required?"
I'm working to help them be curious about the movement we play with in the studio.
Building their understanding about why one shape might be the best fit for their body on that day, but maybe a slightly different focus is needed the next time....and both of those choices are valid!
That there is no "right" way....but more a "best way for this context, goal and body in this moment"!!
I love exploring and learning about how the language we use can impact our clients movement experiences - do you have any great examples of where this has been helpful (or not helpful) for you?
